Abstract

Ecological niches are commonly described from environmental conditions and resources measured at scales convenient to observers, yet insects encounter physical and biological information at much finer spatial and temporal resolutions. Environmental availability alone therefore cannot specify the sensory world experienced by an individual. This ecological perspective separates five analytically distinct components of that problem: local physical exposure, biologically associated information, peripheral detectability, behavioral filtering, and the spatial and temporal consequences of information use. The separation is analytical rather than a claim that these components form a universal linear mechanism. Evidence from thermal ecology, host seeking, plant–insect interactions, predator responses, sensory physiology, neural processing, and insect cognition shows why these components cannot safely be collapsed. Microhabitat can alter apparent thermal responses; multimodal signals may depend on conditional gating; competitor-associated information can acquire unexpected behavioral value; and sensory capacities differ among taxa, developmental states, sexes, and receptor systems. We consequently develop a proposed realized sensory niche: the dynamically restricted portion of locally available physical and biotic information that is accessible to an insect’s sensory system and behaviorally weighted under its current state, previous experience, and ecological context. The construct is offered as an ecological synthesis requiring direct validation rather than as an established niche metric or universal mechanism.

Since 2020, Eurasia Specialized Veterinary Publication has been dedicated to publishing rigorous scientific research in veterinary medicine, entomology, animal health, and related disciplines. Our journals offer a peer-reviewed home for original research, review articles, and short communications, spanning veterinary and clinical sciences, animal health and disease management, pathology, pharmacology, diagnostics, zoonotic diseases, epidemiology, and public health. Our entomology titles bring together work on insect biology, ecology and behavior, taxonomy and systematics, physiology, biodiversity and conservation, pest management, and medical and veterinary entomology. We also welcome interdisciplinary research that explores the connections between animal, human, insect, and environmental health — work that reflects the reality that these fields rarely stand apart from one another. In all that we publish, our aim remains the same: to support the exchange of meaningful, practical scientific knowledge within the international research community.
